Free Kinder Program – Surrey Hills Pre-school
Surrey Hills Pre-school has opted into the Victorian Government’s Free Kinder Program. This decision was made following careful consideration of our financial position, community feedback, and with the support of our Committee of Management.
We have joined the program trusting that families will continue to support our not-for-profit, community-run kinder through voluntary financial and time contributions, helping us maintain the high-quality programs we provide.
Government Funding & Eligibility
The Free Kinder scheme funds up to 15 hours per week at Surrey Hills Pre-school for 3- and 4-year-old kindergarten programs. Children can only receive this funding at one service per year. If your child attends multiple services (such as a childcare centre), Surrey Hills Pre-school must be nominated to receive the funding.

Early Start Kindergarten
Eligible 3-year-old children may access Early Start Kindergarten for free or low-cost kinder with a qualified teacher. Applications can be made via the City of Boroondara Kindergarten Registrations or directly with the pre-school.

Enrolment Deposit
As part of the enrolment process, a deposit of $300 per child will be charged to secure your child’s place at our pre-school. This enrolment deposit is refundable when your child commences and completes their first week of kinder. You may choose instead to donate this amount to the kindergarten as your "voluntary contribution" to help cover incursion and excursion costs, maintenance, and educational resources throughout the year.
Hat Fee
As part of our commitment to the Cancer Council Victoria’s SunSmart program, we provide each child with a named bucket hat, kept at kinder to support sun safety.
A $10 fee is charged at the start of the year to cover the cost of the hat.
Additional & After Hours Fees (Blue and Red Groups only)
Children enrolled in the 4–5-year-old Blue and Red groups may access hours beyond the 15 government-funded hours per week. These options are offered as follows for 2026:
Additional Hours:
Thursdays (Blue Group) or Fridays (Red Group), 11:30am–2:30pm
Fee: $260 per term
After Hours Care:
Weekdays, 2:30pm–4:30pm following the usual kinder session
Fee: $175 per term (per day chosen)
Please note we are unable to offer casual bookings for these programs. Fees are charged on a term basis only.
Fundraising
We hold regular fundraising events to support additional resources and improvements for the kinder. Participation is voluntary but strongly encouraged to help build our community and enhance the kinder experience.
Kindergarten enrolments in Boroondara are currently managed by the Central Registration Scheme. The Boroondara Council website includes information regarding the allocation of kindergarten places and the process for submitting an enrolment application.
Enrolment applications can be completed here . Applications close at the end of term 2 for enrolment the following year.
For any further information, please contact the Council on 9278 4616.
